Those that serve under the rulers understand them. If they are broken, consequences are applies - no matter how barbaric. After a grand escape, it is revealed that her life is diminishing and quickly. Without the ability to speak, and with poison running through her veins, she must learn to trust those she doesn’t know and thoroughly dislikes in order to gain her the immortality that will make her more powerful than ever before.
