Bowl the Maidens Over tells the story of Australia's first women cricketers who played in Bendigo in 1874 as part of the Bendigo Easter Fair.
Facing a severe backlash for daring to play a competitive 'man-only' sport in public, the women found the courage to play again the following year. The book tells the story through a collection of facts, anecdotes and newspaper reports of the time, transporting you to the post-match frenzy generated by those who thought women should be staying home rather than being a group of ‘frisky matrons and forward spinsters’ who were playing at‘manly’ sports.
“This fascinating game in Bendigo has never been properly narrated – until now, in a delightful little book." – Gideon Haigh, The Australian
