Jeffrey Krieg

Local South Australian, Jeffrey Krieg has been captivated by birds of prey since he was 9 years old. He now has over 35 years of experience and extensive knowledge in identifying raptors and has spent over a decade photographing them in the wild. His photographs have been featured in ornithological articles, as well as every issue of The Lutheran Women’s quarterly magazine for 2024.

In 2011, Jeff embarked on a solo journey to create a comprehensive guide to South Australian and Australian birds of prey. His book, Raptors at a Glance, has been featured in Birds SA’s quarterly magazine, The Birder, and positively reviewed in Birdlife Australia’s, Australian Field Ornithology, where Dr Stephen Debus refers to it as being ‘a must’ for raptor enthusiasts.

Non Fiction - Birds and Ornithology
Raptors at a Glance

Raptors at a Glance is a photographic guide to identifying South Australia’s 21 species of diurnal birds of prey. With over 550 colour photographs, this book innovatively provides readers with a wide range of visual aids for identification. It also contains detailed explanations of key characteristics, assisting readers to recognise species from mere silhouettes. Delightful anecdotes and the author’s personal experiences create imagery for readers to feel as though they know the species more intimately, enhancing their ability to make accurate identifications.

This cleverly crafted book is the perfect addition to any nature lover’s bookshelf and is well suited to beginners and enthusiasts alike. The principles and techniques that are taught can also be applied to raptors all over the world, guiding readers to confidently distinguish between species of one of nature’s most captivating and awe-inspiring groups of birds.

'Readers would find the author’s enthusiasm infectious as well as his approach to raptor identification invaluable!’ Dr Stephen Debus, author and honorary research associate in zoology at the University of New England.
