Pete Mitchell

Pete Mitchell lives in Boorloo (Perth, Western Australia) on Wadjuck Noongar land. After a career in science, he turned to fiction. His debut novel released in 2022, Darwin’s Wake, marked this shift. His short story collection is coming in late 2025.
Pete won the 2025 Margaret River Literary Festival prize for short fiction and is a member of The Writers Collective, Writing WA, and Writers Victoria.
His writing blends real-world insight with quiet absurdity. When not writing, Pete explores the bush, reads widely, and studies the subtleties of everyday life.

Darwin's Wake

From the winner of the 2025 Margaret River Writers Festival Competition comes an eclectic collection of stories that explore the strange, tender, and often darkly funny aspects of everyday lives.

In Read My Shorts, Pete Mitchell, author of Darwin's Wake, offers sharply observed glimpses into the lives of the lost, the hopeful, the disillusioned and the quietly defiant. Each story captures a moment where perspectives shift with intriguing consequences. With wit, compassion, and a flair for the unexpected, these stories reflect the beauty and absurdity of being human.
